A mini projector can turn a bedroom wall into a movie screen or a backyard into an outdoor theater. The difference between a "meh" picture and a great one usually comes down to setup, not price. Here is how to get the most out of a portable projector.
1. Control the light
Projectors look best in a dark room. Close blinds, turn off overhead lights and use a dim lamp behind you if you need some light. For outdoor movie nights, wait until after sunset.
2. Pick the right surface
A smooth, matte white or light-gray wall works well. Avoid textured paint, glossy surfaces and colored walls, which shift colors and scatter light. A simple projector screen or even a tight white bedsheet is a cheap upgrade.
3. Find the right distance
Moving the projector farther back makes the picture bigger but a little dimmer. Start close, then back up until the image fills your wall while staying bright and sharp. Check the product manual for the recommended distance range.
4. Square up the image
Place the projector at the center of the wall and at a level height. If you have to angle it, use the keystone correction in the settings to straighten the edges, then fine-tune the focus until text looks crisp.
5. Get better sound
Small projectors have small built-in speakers. For movie nights, pair a Bluetooth speaker or soundbar if your projector supports it — it makes a huge difference.
6. Stream smarter
For smooth streaming, keep the projector close to your Wi-Fi router or on a strong 5 GHz connection. Download content ahead of time for outdoor nights with weak signal.
